Hogna spera The Wolf Spider is one
of the most interesting and voracious predators. They are known for their speed
and large size; therefore they are considered to be hinters. Instead of waiting
to catch a prey in a web, this spider will chase and ambush its prey. Once Wolf Spiders mate,
they mate for life. They need to be sexually mature in order to reproduce. They
undergo this process by molting. (This is when the spider sheds its skin and
leaves it behind) Once the Spiders find each other suitable,
the male releases a drop of sperm on to the web, then he dips his pedipalps
into the sperm which absorbs some of the sperm. Then the male will insert his sperm
in to the female through her epigynum (genital). The female then has the
opportunity to either lay her eggs at that moment or later in the year. Wolf
spiders live to see their young hatch and they spin a protective cocoon for the
eggs and they carry the cocoon around with them.
